About Digital Broadcasting

BS digital broadcasting began service on December 1st, 2000 via broadcasting satellite. Terrestrial digital broadcasting started exactly three years later in the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya areas. Ground-based broadcasting has since been steadily shifted to cover regional stations across Japan by December 1st, 2006. The format gives viewers access to high-picture-sound-quality high definition TV programming, as well as realizes interactive service, and allows them to withdraw various information, including news and weather forecasts. Using an electronic program guide(EPG), viewers could also program recordings.

Meanwhile, the so-called One-Seg terrestrial digital broadcasting service for mobile phones and other mobile devices also kicked off in April 2006.

The Japanese TV stations terminated its analog television broadcasts in all areas in Japan except for the 3 prefectures hardest hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima) on July 24,2011.
On March 31,2012, Japan has successfully completed shut off of analog television transmission.

Digital broadcasting allows distribution of high-quality moving images with no motion-related interference to TV screens installed in moving cars, trains and buses as long as signals could reach the medium.

Interference can spoil the signals and high buildings etc. affect the images before the analogue signals reach the viewer. Digital suffers no deterioration or ghosts and delivers high quality pictures and sound.

The One-Seg service sends images with little deterioration to mobile phones, car TV's, personal computers etc. so that you can also enjoy digital terrestrial broadcasts on the go.
This can also be an important safeguard for life and property in times of emergency because key information about evacuation routes, the safety of family members etc. can be dependably received even when the phone lines are congested.
